In our grand pursuit of achievement in the Silicon Valley, I see too much of pursuit of the “deal”. The deal is ephemeral. It’s a momentary dot in a long path ahead. It means nothing to win a deal. Seriously- nothing. Rather than getting addicted to winning the deal- we have to become addicted to winning for our founders, teams and stakeholders. What really means something is what you do after winning a deal. It’s how hard you kill yourself for that company and your shared aspiration with the founders and all the stakeholders. The true roots of Silicon Valley weren’t in board rooms and parties. They were in garages, dorm rooms and places like Buck’s. Where ideas and dreams were laid out. And not small aspirations. But giant, hairy, big dreams that simultaneously scared the crap out of you and excited and inspired you beyond any amount of fear. Getting back to the roots of working hard as hell for our companies and founders that’s what it’s about. No amount of marketing can change that. The only thing that matters is the truth of what happens in the arena when you are fighting alongside with your founders pursuing those giant dream again. I don’t know much, but I know this much: Big dreams matter. They matter more than the sum of all the small dreams and deals you can muster.
